Discover How TMS Works

A Different Approach to the Treatment of Depression in Southern Utah TMS works by increasing the brain activity necessary to overcome depression and anxiety. Our brains use electrical pulses to send the chemicals like serotonin, dopamine and GABA (neurotransmitters) through our brains that are necessary in order to not be depressed or anxious. When depressed, there is very little electrical activity going on in the brain.

Unlike medication, TMS helps your brain do what it naturally does! Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) uses gentle magnetic stimulation, similar to the strength of an MRI machine. This provides the necessary electrical pulses that your brain needs, getting dopamine, serotonin, and other neurotransmitters moving through your brain.

Neurotransmitters are associated with many things, including attention, mood regulation, motivation, etc. Since a depressed brain has less neural activity – the neurotransmitters aren’t moving around and carrying their messages – we end up with symptoms of depression, such as sadness, despair, hopelessness, lack of sex drive, and lack of motivation. Getting the neurotransmitters moving helps alleviate symptoms of depression and makes it easier for you to engage in healthy behaviors to further your recovery.

TMS stands for Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation. TMS is an FDA-approved depression treatment. It is especially helpful for people with treatment-resistant depression (cases where antidepressants have been ineffective). TMS is a non-invasive treatment that does not require medication. It uses magnetic pulses to stimulate the areas of the brain that are under functioning due to depression.
